My Japanese guests and family had an excellent experience with your company on Thursday 17 June! Everything was extremely well organized, everyone very friendly and the breakfast scrumptious.
Dave and Nick even agreed to take my father, Manfred Bockelmann (81 years old), on the spur of the moment, when the impossible request was made. Other Hot Air Balloon companies had talked me out of it.
It was a wish on his bucket list and he was literally and figuratively on Cloud 9 for days that he could fly once more in a hot air balloon against all odds - a big heartfelt thank you to all of you! |

I want to thank you all for making my birthday so memorable. Everything about your organisation and presentation is excellent! Our Pilot Nik was so good, his information and banter, to say nothing of his ability, made the trip special. All your staff worked effeciently and made everything look easy. One of the most amazing things was that we landed the basket ON the trailer!! Sipping champagne was a great way to finish off the ride. The Actual flight was everything we hoped for. I was entranced by the gentle drift up into the air and the patchwork effect of the fields and vegetation below. The whole experience was so calm and soothing, gentle and quiet!
To complete the morning was your Club House and the splendid breakfast, topped off with the presentation of the Citations in Bill's inimitable and hilarious style.

We're still talking about what fun we had over the past 2 days. It's always great to see Linda all surprised and trying very hard to fish out what was actually happening, even though I sort of gave it away ... but thanks to the Waiter, he just confused him a bit still.
Please pass on my sincere thanks to the staff and management at Amanzingwe; the stay over made the fun and surprise last much longer. Please thank them for being such gracious hosts and treating us so royally. The set-up and everything was so perfect, the food ... out of this world; we enjoyed everything, from dinner in the Wine Cellar to lunch after we experienced the Ama-Zwing-Zwing.
The Balloon Safari was an absolute "Party-Stopper"...Linda and I absolutely enjoyed it and it was worth every penny. The breakfast that followed and everything else in between just made the birthday a memorable one, perhaps for years to come...or maybe until I plan something better than that for another birthday!

In the magic of the morning,
Looking around the large launch field.
Arrays of hot-air balloons inflate,
And their colors are gradually revealed.
Lifting off in the wicker gondola,
I start my heavenward ascension.
The idyllic landscape soon stretches out
To a stupendous dimension;
There is so much pristine scenery -
The rolling hills are dotted with pines.
As the earth seems to slowly rotate below,
I take in outdoor designs.
Floating serenely for a while,
Suspended in the wind's highway,
I'm in panoramic harmony with nature;
And my mind is led astray.
The rejuvenating air is amazingly quiet
Soaring now over some hayfields and crops.
As I decline back towards the ground
I let my balloon dip to kiss the treetops.

A colleague and I, during one of our coffee breaks, grabbed a few wishful-thinking- moments of our working time, many years ago, to make a 'Bucket List' of where we would rather be and what we would rather be doing - at that present moment - than teaching our unruly bunch of students!
Before I had even started compiling my list, Susan had already written her first item: A trip in a Hot Air Balloon!
Many years later (this year, in fact) I was fortunate to win a Trip for Two on one of Bill Harrop's Balloon Safaris through the Star Travel Club.
I had lost touch with Susan in the intervening years, but I always associated a Balloon Trip with her Bucket List Wish. When I won this prize, I rang her and told her that she could cross off No. 1 on her Bucket List as I was taking her as my partner on the Balloon Trip. She was ecstatic. (It was still, after all these years, at the top of her Bucket List)
In the few months between my having booked the trip (I booked it in July for December), Susan, unbeknown to me, had suffered a stroke and was unable to walk without a walker; had lost her sense of balance and was semi-paralyzed on one side of her body. She called me to say that she would be unable to fulfill her dream as she could not imagine how she could even get to the launch site - let alone in and out of a balloon...........
I refused to take NO for an answer and promptly called Bill Harrop's Reservations Office to explain my friend's handicap. Every person I spoke to in that office assured me that there would be no problem and they would take every precaution and make the necessary allowances to accommodate my handicapped friend. (Bill Harrop, himself, called me on the evening before the trip to confirm our arrival the next day and to reassure us that all would well for Susan. This is only one of the reasons for his being the best in the business - personal attention to detail and his passion for the 'art' of ballooning!)
Of course, those of you who have experienced Bill Harrop's Balloon Safaris -(and those you who have not - yet), can ever forget the sights and sounds (or the lack of sounds) as you arrive at the launch site at 5am:
The informal yet slick professionalism with which the team welcomes you as you arrive; sprightly Bill, himself, good- old- jolly- hockey-sticks- greeting each guest personally; the chequered kaleidoscope of colours growing and billowing as the flames coax the unformed sheeting into its prescribed form; the silence..... but for the hissing gas.
And everything - and the world - is.... as it should.....and must be.....
But where Bill Harrop's Balloon Safaris distinguishes itself is in the dictum of the proverbial 'extra mile' in the travel and tourism services industry (I suppose in the ballooning industry, one could say that they went the horizontal and vertical ...... and personal....... extra mile)!
From the moment we arrived, four strapping young men (eye candy, they were, too as an extra bonus) were dispatched to carry my friend, Susan, everywhere: up the stairs to the pavilion and down again; into and out of the balloon; in the balloon; from the field in which we landed; to the pavilion again for our Champagne Breakfast. Nothing was too much effort or too much trouble. And then, of course, the photograph with Bill and the delightful 'Citation' that everyone receives after the trip brought tears to our eyes........
It was all over by 8am. But what fulfilling 'Balloon Bucket-loads-ful' those hours were!
Thank you, Bill Harrop, and every member of your team and thank you to Penny Kearns and The Star Travel Club for this prize. (It seems as though the Universe conspired in its bounty - like a big, crazy, coloured balloon - with all of you - to grant my friend, her No. 1 Wish on her Bucket List).

With regard to the trip itself from start to finish it was very professionally done from the moment we parked to the time we left much later after all had gone. Tracy Robb was a fantastic pilot, but then I am sure you all already know that! The support crew were very hard working from getting the balloon ready to picking us up from the other side of the squatter camp where we had a beautiful landing or two, most gentle it was and we remained upright as well! Your Chef and the waiting staff made us feel very welcome on the return and the sumptious breakfast was very welcome. Last and by no means least it was a real pleasure to meet the MAN with Sarge and have a nice long chat. The walk along the river bank was a very nice bonus as well, at Bill and Mary's suggestion. All in all, something I will easily recommend to others. |

Thank you so much for the most unforgettable and enjoyable experience of our life times. Our opportunity to experience a balloon safari with Bill Harrop's was truly a privilege. The photo's we have now added to our albums are priceless and being a part of the atmosphere at Bill Harrop's and experiencing such a fantastic lifestyle is a far spaced opportunity.
The experience is worth every minute, from the time the balloons are packed out onto the launch-site while we drink hot-chocolate, getting our flight tickets, meeting fellow passengers and the crew, Manie's classic jokes and also informative tour of the Hartebeespoort Area, the champaign at landing, the delicious variety at the buffet breakfast, the list goes on all the way until the time we get back into our cars and drive back home.
The venue is state of the art and clean, the staff are helpful and kind, never was there a single problem.

She had a magical birthday experience thanks to the breathtaking views and sense of calm as well as our FANTASTIC pilot Tracy and superb staff! Thanks for being so accommodating and allowing our family to join us for breakfast. This added to my mother's special day. The breakfast team were wonderful... I think we were the last to leave :)
As I am personally afraid of heights, but knowing it was a dream of my mom's, I was a bit reluctant to fly but willing to 'take one for the team!' But it was the most beautiful, peaceful experience with the bonus of seeing some amazing wildlife. Tracy also has a great way of making you feel comfortable in her experienced hands and easy with her sense of humour.
So, my mom and I go away with an unforgettable memory. Please pass on our thanks to all involved.

We had a wonderful, outstanding balloon experience; I really did not
think before the time that it would be that special!
Well, at about five in the morning on a beautifully bright summer morning
the Balloon Captain, Tracy Robb blasted some fire (upwards!) into this huge
colourful toy and up we went. My description of smooth and serene floating
over our beloved valley in all its splendour after the rain can never do
justice to the experience. It must count as one of the best spent hours of
my life. Do you remember the film that Barbara Streisand played in: On a
clear day you can see forever! Her song in that is about the best account
of what one feels up there. Truly a remarkable and memorable event!

What an amazing trip ! This is something we would never have done were it not for our 25th anniversary - we were looking for something different and we certainly got it. Tracy, our pilot for the trip, kept us very entertained throughout the flight and I would recommend her to anyone who was going up in a balloon for the first time. She was fantastic !
We found the Champagne breakfast very well catered for and all the staff very professional and friendly. I will most definitely do this again (maybe for our 50th anniversary, ha ha )
The lodge was also good. Food excellent and staff very helpful, polite and friendly. Just not enough time to enjoy to the fullest.

My fiancée and myself recent had the awesome pleasure of experiencing the site of the earths crust from Gods window from secure environment of a Hot Air Balloon chartered by Bill Harrop Safaris. However we are not writing to tell you about our amazing experience but rather to blow the trumpet of Bill Harrop Safaris and their open and honest business practice.
We were informed that the flight would take approximately 1 hour but our flight lasted about 40min, which felt like a life time of pleasure and not thinking any more of what happened we received a call 10 days after our flight to inform us that we were going to be reimbursed for the short flight. We were absolutely gob smacked at the honesty of this origination. How often do you hear today of poor business ethics and the lack of top class quality? Well they proved us wrong and re-wrote the rule book for us on honesty and because of this we will endeavour to go out and promote such originations that take pride in offering quality and openly and honestly strive to achieve transparent and excellent business practices.

From the top class service at Plumari to the exhilarating rush and perfect hospitality at Bill Harrops it was an experience of a life time and something we would most certainly do again. The highlight obviously was the fantastic atmosphere and people over at Bill Harrop's "ORIGINAL" Balloon Safaris not to mention the unbelievable experience and pleasure of literally floating amongst the clouds and being able to see the sun rise from Gods window was mind blowing to say the least (now we too know why the birds sing).

It was THE MOST memorable Stag party anyone could have wished for. Only one out of the 9 knew where they were going and the others had wild guesses...elephant riding, butterfly catching, wellness centre with massages, ice skating, lion stalking. It was such fun planning it and although I wasnt there we have some amazing photos.
Bjorn raved about it in his wedding speech...it made such an impression on him.
Us ladies hope to go next, some time this year!!

To see the Magaliesburg and Joburg city outline from this view is something that is truly magical. |

Just a quick note to let you know that we got our long awaited balloon trip on Sunday finally. This has been the longest running birthday in history, and we certainly ended it on a high!
All the months of waiting were well worthwhile as we discovered to our delight. As expected, there is nothing as peaceful, relaxing and at the same time exhilarating as floating above the fields in a basket. With Eugene as our pilot, we had no jitters or worries at all, and felt right at home up there in the beautiful blue Magaliesburg morning, watching the mists over the Hartebeespoort Dam and the changing colours in the mountains around us. Delightful, unforgettable, but too short, of course!

Wow, what an experience. From arriving at Riverbend Cottage to the trip - everything was just so special.
We were so spoilt at Riverbend, it felt more like visiting an Aunt & Uncle on their farm. Never before have we felt so welcome. The food were special and Top notch, the accommodation was just perfect, we even saw the "Nag apies".
The Balloon ride was so much fun with Sam keeping us informed and entertained.I'm sure he is the best Balloon pilot in the world. His landing was perfect!
We would love to do it again, this time in summer, just to experience a beautiful green valley instead of a winter veldt.

I woke Michelle up very early in the morning. She was a bit confused why I want to go this early on our holiday. I told her we had to drive very far, but will stop to meet some of my friends. She did not suspect a thing, not even as we took the turn off at Skeerpoort and to the Balloon Safari field. (Under the impression we going to pick-up some friends of mine). Only after we had the nicest cup of hot chocolate for the cold and standing around the bush fire, she saw the balloons. She looked at me with this “surprise of a lifetime look” on her face and said, “Is it for us?”
From that moment it was just awesome, seeing the balloons going up one after the other. The experience of the flight was incredible and Bill was an excellent pilot and commentator. We took some special and memorable photos during our flight. During flight I’ve heard Bill announce that we entered into the 1km height kiss club and who wants to join the club. Well, I was the first to give Michelle a memorable kiss. The hour flight was just unbelievable to describe in words. Bill and the ground crew handled the landing in an unbelievable way and put us down so softly that we did not even know that we were on the ground. It was an experience of a lifetime and the two of us will never forget the Balloon trip.
After landing we had some champagne to celebrate, while the ground crew packed-up the balloon. During this time there was just laughter around and happy moments about the flight and the awesome experience. We took a bus ride back to the site. On arrival, we were directed to the special arranged table just for the two of us nearby a small dam. We had the nicest breakfast and after breakfast, I asked Michelle to be my wife. Michelle was so surprised and happy about the whole thing. The balloon safari made it so much more romantic and a special day. Of cause she said yes and the two of us are on cloud number 9 and very, very happy.
So, from the two of us, we just want to say, THANKS very much to everyone who made hour day so awesome and special.
We enjoyed it very much and appreciate all you have done for us. We will do it again in the future! |

Wow, what an experience. From arriving at Riverbend Cottage to the trip - everything was just so special.
We were so spoilt at Riverbend, it felt more like visiting an Aunt & Uncle on their farm. Never before have we felt so welcome. The food were special and Top notch, the accommodation was just perfect, we even saw the "Nag apies".
The Balloon ride was so much fun with Sam keeping us informed and entertained.I'm sure he is the best Balloon pilot in the world. His landing was perfect!
We would love to do it again, this time in summer, just to experience a beautiful green valley instead of a winter veldt.

Thanks again for everything the experience was out of this world. My kids really enjoyed it, my daughter had a speech on hot air ballooning on Wednesday and she took the tape with that we recorded where they used the fans and then the burners, the whole setting up of the balloon and everthing. It was a dark and stormy night. (or at least a dark and quiet morning).
At 4am, I enticed Sue out of bed ?(thump!)
Calmly we dressed. Without a clue why her slumber had been interrupted she bravely followed me to the car, not completely buying my story that the aliens had landed and that we had been randomly chosen as part of the welcoming party.
Red bull at the ready we made our way towards Hartebeespoort Dam and the Magaliesberg Mountain Range.
A cool one hour later, we arrived to find 3 hot-air balloons preparing for take-off. As the sun rose on what turned out to be an amazing day, we downed our coffee and climbed aboard ?S1?.
After a quick safety talk and some landing practice (ala put your head between your legs and kiss your butt goodbye) we ascended into the stratosphere as gently and smoothly as a champagne cork being released from a well shaken bottle. Just kidding ? the balloon was actually remarkably stable and quiet, and the ride as smooth as silk. As we glided along we saw an abundance of early morning activity, even three jackals making their way home presumably after a nocturnal prowl. The atmosphere was amazing, you truly feel at one with nature and the elements up there. At one point the pilot descended to let Sue pick a leaf, clipping the tree tops as we went.
Then it was back up ? so high that the clouds were below us! This made for some amazing photography including some shots of the sun rising beneath the moon. So with the planets aligned and altitude sickness well and truly set in (hey that?s my story and I?m sticking with it), I decided the time was right to pop the question. ?Did anyone remember to pack the beer?? ? NO NOT THAT ONE. The one where I told Sue that she was the most amazing person that I had ever met and would she like to spend the rest of her life with me?. ? For future reference guys, if you ever want to shut the missus up ? that is how you do it! (Could get a bit expensive on the rings though).
She just stood in front of me, massive smile on her face, fighting back the tears, then she threw her arms around me and gave me a big kiss! Then some old lady in the back of the balloon said ?I think that?s a YES!? - so now I?m not sure which one of them I?m marrying?., but hey I?m sure it?s gonna be one hell of a party!
So after an hour in the heavens, with joy and jubilation all around, we made our way back down to earth and waited for the recovery vehicles. This was followed by a beautiful breakfast and champagne with friends and family through-out the day, culminating in a great New Years Eve party that took us well into 2006. But what a grrrrreat way to end 2005 ? an amazing year that truly has been two thousand and thrive for us.
So we?re very proud to announce that we?re engaged. Thanks for all the good wishes and sentiments. In retrospect Sue also blames the whole thing on altitude sickness, but it?s too late - I got her now. She just doesn?t seem to believe that she?s my financier not my fianc??! |

We had THE most wonderful experience for two days!!! It is truly difficult to single out a specific person or event, it was all so awesome! From Wendy's call, to check our arrival for lunch on Saturday through to the fond farewells on Sunday with all the special people at the sanctuary, the very wonderful message for our anniversary from Bill on Sunday (very early!!) the spectacular view from up high and Tracy's lovely sense of humour and all the bantering with the support team (and all their hard work!!!) the most delicious brekkie and then a citation to crown all!! I tell you Sydney Harbour Bridge walk has got nothing on you!!!
And then to top it all, your message! What can I say..... well done to your endeavours, your personal touch in everything, and to the absolute attention to detail and caring that we experienced not only from all the people involved, but indeed through the most adorable off all - the Elephants. Thank you to those very special people that care and love them, so that in turn us, who need healing may receive it unconditionally!

We only ever dreamt of going on a Balloon Safari, can you imagine our surprise when Robbie phoned us with the wonderful news!!!
A few of our friends suggested we wait until January or February to go on the Balloon (can you imagine!!!!!)
Michael and I decided to go ASAP, which was on the 3rd of September 2005.
Friday the 2nd September, Michael could not sleep a wink, he was up @3a.m sharp (I think it was actually earlier then that!!!)
We arrived at Bill Harrop's Original Balloon Safaris just before 6 a.m.
We thought we would be a bit on the nervous side, well none of that happened!
Bill Harrop (lovely person) made us feel so welcome(and not nervous at all).
We had a lovely cup of steaming coffee and just watched the beautiful sunrise.
Not long after that we set off on our ride.
It was an absolute stunning experience.
Afterwards we had a lovely brunch.

In mine, I am proud to have flown with your outfit and the experience has been one of profound impact on my perceptions of many realities, which will now forever change my life ito outlooks and which I will greatly cherish as long as I live.
At an appropriate time and/ or event, possibly your next management or full staff meeting, it would be appreciated if you could please extend my personal appreciation to all involved in making this event an exceptional one in my life.
The fact that it was a "Proudly South African" experience is one which holds even greater pride and admiration for me. (An aspect that your management should investigate with the aim to formalise association, as I believe that there are very lucrative spin-offs.)
Well done and thank you, be assured that I will be back, and a walking ambassador for your outfit and the need for this life experience.
The only little disappointment I had was that there was a lack of merchandising material at the end of the trip, and which I feel should be investigate by your management team, as it would enhance your profits and drive PR efforts all round ito the added exposure it would continue to create well after the actual event itself.

We had an absolutely fantastic time flying with Tracy - we're still talking about it back in the UK. The whole experience exceeded our expectations. We were also impressed with the attention to detail that was paid to all aspects from booking to the after-flight breakfast on the ground.

Thank you very much. It was the easiest that I have ever gotten everyone out of bed at 4am on a weekend :-) It was very enjoyable. The crew as well as the other passengers were friendly and seemed to be enjoying themselves as much as we were. My in-laws commented on how professional and safe we felt before and during the flight.
